# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lampeter

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Lampeter.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Lampeter and Parc-y-rhos run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lampeter: how it takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off St. Thomas Street, perhaps at The Castle Hotel on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it happens in Cwmann or the middle of Lampeter, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Pentre-bach or a forecourt in Lampeter, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Ceredigion the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of High Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Lampeter: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Murco, Shell or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car clear when you ask.

Your own drive around Lampeter is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M4, under 50 miles from Lampeter.

A short hop across Lampeter is a smaller job than a run towards Swansea, under 50 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Lampeter: what occurs when we arrive

Outside the local primary school, near St Thomas' Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those answers settle the work and our quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of the car.

Next our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once we arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
