# Lane Side: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Lane Side.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many newer diesels driven round Lane Side and Shore Edge carry another liquid as well.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lane Side: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Hannerton Road before work, or in the car park at The Shay Wake on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Whether it takes place in Top o th Knowl or the middle of Lane Side, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Lane Side or a driveway out in Clough. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Rochdale's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Greater Manchester the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Button Hole.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- The two under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Lane Side?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Red Rose Filling Station, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

Your own drive around Lane Side is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Leave the M62 — under 3 miles out of Lane Side — at the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Lane Side is less a job than a run of under 10 miles towards Manchester, and so tell us.

## Lane Side: what takes place when our engineers turn up

Our van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Shore Edge Methodist Church, or by East Crompton St George's CofE School.

What liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set both work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you are told our quote — before anything else.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears away unaided, however long it sits.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

After that we fire it up and check it runs correctly before we leave.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
