# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Langbank

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump starts drawing it.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully flushed where your car sits in Langbank.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Langbank

Do:

- Take your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it away.

- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting PA14 6, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Don't:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Main Road.

- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

The staff working at any Langbank forecourt — the Morrisons among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Dumbarton last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a car sitting around Langbank with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's just inside the tank, nothing changes.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Murco.

Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the engine does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, and so watering it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Castlehill or the centre of Langbank equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only in the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever the vehicle has come to rest across Renfrewshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Langbank?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

It mostly happens at home, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, just off Greenock Road, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Langbank or the rest of Renfrewshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Langbank, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may show up, perhaps part way across Langbank or returning from Gleddoch Golf and Spa Resort.

Once safe, stop then switch everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M8, under a mile from Langbank, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Langbank to park near Langbank West, Crannog and a drive of under 15 miles towards Glasgow are such separate jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it is spotted quickly.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Langbank: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street near War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Langbank, and our van travels to it.

The job depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — what was put in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying your tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear out on its own.

After that, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers turn up, provided your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

Then our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at the nearest station or a drive around Langbank.

Our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go.

No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Langbank itself

Langbank has a low elevation of around 7 metres above sea level and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Langbank is located near several other small communities, including Kirktonhill, Brucehill, and Dennystown, and is around 14 miles from Glasgow.

## AdBlue drains across Langbank and Renfrewshire

AdBlue call-outs around Langbank are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Kirktonhill, Brucehill plus Dennystown — and much of Renfrewshire beyond, across PA postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a border or somewhere tricky to describe; ring and ask.

Langbank is a coastal village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Langbank

Every job differs, so not one single quote would be honest.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Finlaystone Country Estate.

With that in mind, each call from Langbank opens with the same trio — what got in, what quantity, whether it ran — before any figure.

With them, the range shrinks to a single firm number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still next to the car around Langbank?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing you can do.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Langbank or anywhere around Renfrewshire.
