# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Langley: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Langley, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Langley and Sprats Down carry a second fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Langley: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Chalewood Road before work, or in the car park at The Langley Tavern heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in West Common or bang in the centre of Langley.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Stone or a forecourt around Langley.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Hamble? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Mopley, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Langley already?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Langley.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then switch off.

Come off the M27 — under 10 miles out of Langley — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Southampton, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Langley.

## Langley: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Francis, or outside Blackfield Primary and Nursery School.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and price.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## About Langley, for a moment

Langley is a coastal village in Hampshire, situated near the city of Southampton and overlooking the Solent Strait. ## AdBlue drains round Langley, and Hampshire beyond

As a coastal village, Langley shares its vans surrounding places — Blackfield, Roughdown — right across SO postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Quote a postcode that starts SO45 1, and the van arrives quickest.

There's no need to shift your car.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Langley Tavern, a side street close to Blackfield Baptist Church: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Gang Warily, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Langley people, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
