# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Langmuir? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Langmuir, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has been run.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Langmuir: the first few minutes

To do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting G66 2, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never:

- Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is wasted.

- Even a short way up Applecross Road is too far to drive it.

- Draining the tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

Moving your vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Langmuir forecourt you are on, the Gulf included.

If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases.

No part inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Cleddans last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around Langmuir leaves it worse. In that tank only, waiting does nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; running the motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Waterside or the middle of Langmuir.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever across East Dunbartonshire your car has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Langmuir

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

Usually it is never the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle.

After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Cowal Crescent.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Chase Inn, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other car of a family with one of each fuels.

Anywhere in East Dunbartonshire, Langmuir as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Langmuir, and your engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, perhaps midway across Langmuir or returning from Merkland Local Nature Reserve.

Once you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Langmuir lies under 3 miles from the M80; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Langmuir to the car park by Auchendavy Roman Fort is one matter; heading towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it's spotted early.

## Langmuir: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by Merkland Outdoor Recreation Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever the car has stopped in Langmuir, our technicians travel to it.

Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about the amount, plus if the motor has run.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last.

Whether it is a parking bay by Lenzie or a driveway in Langmuir, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Langmuir itself

Langmuir is a suburban area situated on the riverside in East Dunbartonshire, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Langmuir lies close to the nearby places of Harestanes, Rosebank, and Merkland, and is approximately 7 miles from Glasgow. Langmuir has a population of around 4174 people and is located at an elevation of 58 metres. Langmuir is part of the wider Glasgow urban area, with the city centre within easy reach.

## AdBlue drains across East Dunbartonshire, Langmuir included

AdBlue call-outs around Langmuir go to teams that cover the towns around it — Harestanes, Rosebank as well as Merkland — and much of East Dunbartonshire beyond, throughout G postcodes.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.

Langmuir is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Langmuir: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Hillhead Community Centre.

Ahead of any quote, never afterwards, each call from Langmuir begins with three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

Given those replies, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Langmuir?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if the engine ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout East Dunbartonshire, Langmuir too.
