# Langney Village: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Langney Village, catching it before the engine turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Langney Village and Friday Street carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Langney Village: how it happens

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Priory Road, or heading home in the car park at Martello Inn.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Langney Village or out in Langney.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Langney Village forecourt or a drive over in Westham, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark which goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Pevensey & Westham.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are across East Sussex — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Saxby Close.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Langney Village?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Premier Marina or anywhere else.

If you are on your own driveway in Langney Village, leave it where it sits.

Where the engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

Langney Village sits under 50 miles from the M23; on it, take the first exit.

A short hop across Langney Village is a smaller job than a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Langney Village, and what happens next

Outside Langney Primary Academy, near Saint Richard or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies decide this work and our quote.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the filter has been flushed — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
