# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Laurieknowe: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Laurieknowe.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — yet plenty of newer diesels seen about Laurieknowe and Maxwelltown carry a second fluid as well.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Laurieknowe: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Nelson Street before work, or in the car park at The Globe Inn on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Laurieknowe or out in Summerville.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Lochfield or a forecourt in Laurieknowe.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Dumfries? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Dumfries and Galloway the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush by Terregles Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Laurieknowe?

Brief list, then. First: your engine remains off.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Tesco, BP or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away if asked.

Your own drive in Laurieknowe is the place it should stay.

Already started? Pull over when it's sensible, then turn off.

The next junction means the place to come off if you're on the A74(M), under 15 miles from Laurieknowe.

Distance counts — a short hop across Laurieknowe makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles towards Carlisle — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Laurieknowe, and what happens next

By the local primary school, near Dumfries Ice Bowl or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers determine the work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away unaided. Hence it matters more.

After your filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Laurieknowe and Dumfries and Galloway: AdBlue drains across the area

Nithside and Suffolk Hill are among the towns around Laurieknowe, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, over DG postcodes.

Give a postcode beginning DG2 9, and our van gets there quickest.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Summerhill Land Art, a side street close to Palmerston Park: we drain it where it stands.

Tricky to explain, like the back of War Memorial Gates? By a county line? Asking beats assuming, so phone.

## In short, for Laurieknowe motorists

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Dumfries and Galloway, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
