# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Laxfield: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Laxfield.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels on the roads around Laxfield and Cratfield carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Laxfield: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Vicarage Road before work, or in the car park at The Royal Oak Laxfield on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Ubbeston or the middle of Laxfield, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Chippenhall Green or a forecourt in Laxfield, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Halesworth? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Suffolk that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Street, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly through the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel filler remained shut throughout. After that, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Laxfield?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone runs the pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own drive around Laxfield is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Laxfield lies over 50 miles from the M11; on it, take the next exit.

A short hop across Laxfield is a smaller job than a run towards Norwich, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians get there in Laxfield

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it by All Saints Church of England Primary School, Laxfield, near Laxfield Museum or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Those replies settle the work and the price, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run.

Nobody heads out until you have had the price by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
