# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Leabrooks: Why It Occurs

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Leabrooks.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Cotes Park, as well as Leabrooks, run on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Leabrooks: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Swanwick Road before work, or in the car park at The Three Horseshoes on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Somercotes or the middle of Leabrooks, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Sleet Moor or a forecourt around Leabrooks.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Alfreton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are across Derbyshire — a routine to use.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Main Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Leabrooks?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else.

At home around Leabrooks? Then your car stays put.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then turn off.

Leabrooks sits under 3 miles from the M1; there, use the first exit.

A short hop across Leabrooks is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Leabrooks: what happens when our engineers arrive

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Somerlea Park Centre, or outside Somerlea Park Junior School.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide the work and quote.

That quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. Hence it matters more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
