# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Leeds

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Leeds, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has been run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Leeds: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Give us a postcode starting LS1 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Moving the vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch up Great George Street.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll your car away from the island if you're at a forecourt around Leeds, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a dedicated tank it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what your engine emits.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Camp Field last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

A motor left sitting around Leeds with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a second kind of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Jet and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; using your motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Little London or the middle of Leeds.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Yorkshire the vehicle is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Leeds

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Blenheim Primary School.

Close to Portland Street, someone pours a bottle in on the drive in the evening.

One more pattern: dim light, the car park outside Victoria Family & Commercial Hotel, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Leeds or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

## Leeds: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and lines.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Mandela Gardens or halfway across Leeds.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the A58(M), under a mile from Leeds, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Leeds to park near Leeds Town Hall and a drive of under 10 miles for Wakefield are such different jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

When it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Leeds?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Leeds: a side street close to Oxford Place Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the work, and so first our technicians ask what got in, roughly what quantity, and if the engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear away by itself.

Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of the car.

Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the last step.

You drive off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Leeds or in a space at the nearest station.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Leeds, for a moment

Leeds is a major city situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, with its landscape shaped by the River Aire. The city is nestled at the edge of the Pennines, a mountain range in northern England. Leeds has a long history dating back to its humble beginnings as a small settlement, which over time grew into a significant commercial hub. It is now a thriving urban centre with a rich industrial heritage.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Leeds included

Over the LS postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue call-outs around Leeds serve most of West Yorkshire too, Bagby Fields, The Leylands and Granary Wharf included.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Leeds, a city, well.

## Leeds: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Leeds Combined Court Centre.

That is why every call from Leeds starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

With those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

The price is given on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Alongside the car in Leeds, right now?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the best step there is.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Leeds or anywhere within West Yorkshire.
