# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lent Rise? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition too.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Lent Rise.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lent Rise: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians can see.

- Ring just where you are. Say a SL1 7 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- Moving your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch along Lent Rise Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Lent Rise filling station — the Esso among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Taplow yesterday and never switched on remains the simple case, as long as no one touches your key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Lent Rise with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is only in that tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and the issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Rose Hill or the middle of Lent Rise.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest around Buckinghamshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Lent Rise?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Lent Rise School the top-up is rushed.

Near Winters Acre, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Olive Tree, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Lent Rise or the rest of Buckinghamshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lent Rise?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, perhaps part way across Lent Rise or coming back from Burnham Park.

Once you safely can, stop and turn everything off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the Huntercombe Spur, under a mile from Lent Rise, at the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, and so driving towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Lent Rise to the car park by Burnham methodist Church.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

If it's caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

## Lent Rise: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Lent Rise: a side street near United Reformed Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, so first we ask what got in, roughly the amount, plus whether your engine has run.

Then the tank is drained where the vehicle waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of the vehicle comes at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes at the end.

Then we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Taplow or a drive in Lent Rise.

It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers go.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Assuming won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and ask.

No moving is needed. In Lent Rise, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the vehicle is drained where it stands, be it in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Lent Rise

There is no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St. Peter's Church, Burnham.

Which fluid went in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Lent Rise enquiry begins by asking exactly those, before a quote, not after.

When those are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Next to the car around Lent Rise, right now?

In that case, do nothing — that's the best move there is.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.
