# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lepton: Why It Occurs

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the vehicle stands in Lepton, is normally all it takes when found before the engine runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels in Dogley Lane, like those in Lepton, run on two fluids; the motor takes just the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Lepton

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Rowley Lane, perhaps outside The Sun on the way home that evening.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in Rowley Hill or the middle of Lepton, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Linfit or a forecourt in Lepton, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Stocksmoor? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere in West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Green, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lepton?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at BP, Esso or another forecourt will usually help to push your car away if asked.

If you're on your own drive in Lepton, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Lepton lies under 5 miles from the M62; on it, take the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Lepton.

## When our engineers turn up around Lepton, what happens?

Outside Rowley Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School, near St John's Church or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those answers determine the work and our price, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

No one sets off until you have heard our price over the phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once your filter has been flushed — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before we leave.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

The drain takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a road by Burton Village Hall, or a lay-by towards Lepton Great Wood.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Middleage Market, ring and ask rather than assuming.
