# Levenshulme: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Levenshulme.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Levenshulme and Reddish carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Levenshulme

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Bristol Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Sidings heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you vehicles come second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Heaton Chapel or bang in the centre of Levenshulme.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Levenshulme or a driveway over in Rusholme. A few seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Greater Manchester, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Elmsworth Avenue.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Levenshulme?

The short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Essar, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

Your own drive in Levenshulme is the place it should stay.

When your engine has run by now, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off.

On the M60, under 3 miles from Levenshulme, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Levenshulme is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles to Manchester, so say.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up in Levenshulme

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Chapel Street Community Primary School, close to Levenshulme Baptist Church or on your own drive.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers determine the work and our price.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then your tank is cleared and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

Next we start the engine and check it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

Guessing doesn't help behind Chapel St, on a border, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.
