# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lever Edge: Why It Happens

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Lever Edge.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of modern diesels driven round Lever Edge and Middle Hulton hold a second fluid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each filling station call-out, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Lever Edge

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a driveway off Higher Swan Lane before work, or in the car park at The Morris Dancers heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Daubhill or the middle of Lever Edge, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt in Lever Edge or a drive over in Great Lever. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Bolton? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere around Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Rufford Drive at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've found the filler and read it.

- The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Lever Edge?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Texaco, Esso or another forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle away if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Lever Edge, leave the car where it sits.

When your engine has run already, stop safely then turn it off.

Lever Edge sits under a mile from the M61; on it, take the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Lever Edge is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Salford, and so say.

## When our engineers turn up around Lever Edge, what occurs?

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside St. William of York Roman Catholic Church, or by Lever Edge Primary Academy.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

Nobody sets off before you've had the price by phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Once your filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before we leave.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
