# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Leyburn: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Leyburn.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains how it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the engine — yet many current diesels driven around Leyburn and Spennithorne carry another fluid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Leyburn: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Harmby Road, or on the way home in the car park at Golden Lion.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Harmby or the middle of Leyburn, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Leyburn or a drive out in Middleham. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark which belongs in which filler right there.

- Can't see it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in North Yorkshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Railway Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Leyburn already?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Gulf, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Leyburn.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off.

The next junction is the place to leave if you're on the Catterick Bypass, under 10 miles from Leyburn.

A short hop across Leyburn is a smaller job than a run towards Ripon, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Leyburn, and what takes place next

By Leyburn Primary School, close to Leyburn Methodist Church or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## About Leyburn itself

Leyburn is a town in North Yorkshire, situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales at an elevation of 190 metres. Leyburn lies near the villages of Harmby, Wensley, and Bellerby, and is approximately 17 miles from the city of Ripon. ## AdBlue drains round Leyburn, and North Yorkshire beyond

Being a town, Leyburn has the same vans as nearby areas — Wensley, Bellerby — right across DL postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Give a postcode beginning DL8 5, and our van arrives quickest.

The vehicle remains put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Thorny Covert, a side street near St Matthew's: our engineers drain it where it is.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Milners of Leyburn, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## The short version for Leyburn drivers

Read the cap before you pour.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Keep it off then ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, throughout North Yorkshire.
