# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lickey End: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Lickey End.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels around Upper Marlbrook, as well as Lickey End, run on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Lickey End

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Alcester Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Crabmill.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Hall Flat or right in the heart of Lickey End.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Linthurst or a forecourt around Lickey End, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many cars show what goes in each filler right there.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Bromsgrove? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever around Worcestershire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of School Lane, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Never go on to step five.

## Lickey End: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or somewhere else.

If you're on your own driveway around Lickey End, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to come off if you are on the M42, under a mile from Lickey End.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Lickey End makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Birmingham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive around Lickey End

Our van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Lickey End Methodist Church, or by Lickey End First School.

The answers decide the work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

That quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Your engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before we leave.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
