# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lilford

Pause reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Lilford.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels on the roads round Lilford and Howe Bridge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Lilford?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Red Waters before work, or in the car park at Hilton Park on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Lilford or out in Leigh.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Lilford forecourt or a driveway over in Siddow Common, spend a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Atherton's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is across Greater Manchester — a routine to follow.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Brookfield Street at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lilford?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Asda or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Lilford.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely and turn it off.

Leave the M61 — under 5 miles out of Lilford — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Lilford is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Salford — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Lilford, and what occurs next

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Leigh St John's CofE Primary, near Church of God or on your own drive.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

Nobody sets off before you've had our price by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it sits.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and confirm that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
