# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lilybank

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off and keep the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until your engine sucks it round.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Lilybank.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Lilybank, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting PA14 5, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call wherever you are.

Don't do these:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Turning your key to ignition alone sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.

- Even a short distance up Birkmyre Avenue is too far to drive the car.

- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

On a forecourt around Lilybank, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, which is why a car filled in Port Glasgow yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward one, provided no one turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting in Lilybank with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Morrisons, and the issue is thinned fuel.

No harm is done while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, and so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Glen Huntly or the centre of Lilybank equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Inverclyde the car is standing.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Lilybank?

It's not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in.

After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Farquhar Road.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by The Waterwheel.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new car, a company motor, or the other motor of a home with both fuels — the vehicles people know the least.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere around Lilybank or the remainder of Inverclyde you happen to be.

## Lilybank: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Via the filter, through the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may appear, perhaps midway across Lilybank or returning from Gibshill Forest.

Once you safely can, stop then turn everything off — with no restarting to see.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Lilybank sits under 10 miles from the M8; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Lilybank to the car park by Devol Viaduct / Nine Arches Railway Bridge (ruins) is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and we do all of it where your car has ended up.

Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Lilybank: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Lilybank — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Sir Stanley Spencer sculpture — the van comes to your vehicle.

What was put in, about the quantity, plus if the engine has been run: we check before all else, since those shape the work.

Next, draining your tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

Testing your car follows last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped.

Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking bay by Bogston or a driveway around Lilybank, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go.

We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## Lilybank and Inverclyde: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Lilybank go to teams that cover the towns around it — Chapleton, Bogston as well as Gibshill — and most of Inverclyde beyond, across PA postcodes.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Lilybank is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Lilybank

Not one flat figure could be fair, because each job is different.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind TK Maxx.

That is why every call from Lilybank starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

With those replies, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## In Lilybank and still beside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether it ran are everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Inverclyde, Lilybank too.
