# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Linden

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Linden.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows covers how it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Tredworth, as well as Linden, carry on two liquids; your engine takes just your diesel.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Many of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Linden

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Seymour Road before work, or in the car park at The Avenue on the way home.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in St Pauls or bang in the centre of Linden.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Linden or a drive out in Tuffley. Seconds, no more.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Gloucester.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere around Gloucestershire, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and never rushed by Tuffley Avenue on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Linden already?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs your pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive around Linden, leave the car where it stands.

When your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn it off.

Linden lies under 3 miles from the M5; there, use the next exit.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Linden is a smaller job than heading under 3 miles towards Gloucester — so say about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Linden, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Saint Stephen, or by Linden Primary School.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the answers decide the work and the price.

On the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then your tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

After that our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly before leaving.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains about Linden, and Gloucestershire beyond

As a residential suburb, Linden shares its vans nearby areas — Hempsted, Podsmead — all the way across GL postcodes and the wider area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a GL1 5 postcode to the van.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Oval, a side street close to Podsmead Community Centre: our technicians drain it where it is.

Guessing won't help at the back of Blackbridge Sports & Athletics Club, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.

## The short version for Linden drivers

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.
