# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lings Common: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is in Lings Common.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Lings Common and Church Field carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Lings Common?

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Dene Close, or at The Masons Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Wickersley or the middle of Lings Common, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Lings Common forecourt or a driveway out in Listerdale, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Rotherham Central.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere around South Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Orchard, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lings Common?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Morrisons, Shell or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear when asked.

On your own drive in Lings Common? Then your car remains where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M18 — under a mile out of Lings Common — at the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Lings Common.

## Our arrival around Lings Common, and what happens next

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Wickersley Methodist Church, or by St Alban's CofE (Aided) Primary School.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because those answers set the work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before dispatch.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested.

After that our technicians start the car and confirm it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
