# Linmere: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system draws it in.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully flushed where the car stands in Linmere.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Linmere: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting LU5 5, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Moving your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, so leave the vehicle off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Betony Meadow.

- Draining the tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

The staff working at any Linmere forecourt — the Esso included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Tithe Farm last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Linmere with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's only in your tank, it doesn't.

And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Essar and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Linmere or out in Houghton Regis, costs more than almost any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever across Bedfordshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Linmere

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it's not the filling station: someone buys a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Thornhill Primary School the refill is hurried.

Close to Box Crescent, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Another version: dim light, the car park by The Harvest Home, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

Rented vehicles, new motors, fleet cars, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Wherever you are in Linmere or the rest of Bedfordshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Linmere, and the motor started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Linmere Park or halfway across Linmere.

When you safely can, stop and switch everything off — without turning it on again to see.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M1, under a mile from Linmere, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Hopping across Linmere to the car park by Houghton Regis Day Centre is one matter; heading for St Albans, under 15 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is caught soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Linmere?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Linmere — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Chalton Village Hall — the van travels to the vehicle.

The job depends on three answers, which our engineers get first — which fluid was put in, the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

Then your tank is cleared where your car stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers arrive, if your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Leagrave or on a driveway around Linmere.

The check before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains around Linmere and across Bedfordshire

Chalton, Houghton Park and Parkside are among the towns around Linmere that the same teams serve, together with much of Bedfordshire further out, throughout the LU postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

No towing is needed. In Linmere, a small village, a mobile service fits: the car is drained on the spot, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Linmere: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight gap behind St Thomas' Meeting House.

Before a figure, not after, each call from Linmere opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and if it ran.

With them, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## Linmere: still alongside the vehicle?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.
