# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Listerdale

Leave the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Listerdale.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels around Listerdale and Lings Common run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Listerdale: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Black Carr Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Three Horeshoes.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

Church Field or the heart of Listerdale: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Brecks or a forecourt in Listerdale.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Rotherham Central.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning comes on — wherever it is across South Yorkshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Springfield Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Listerdale?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Texaco, Esso Tesco Fuel Station or any other — the attendants will usually help push your car clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Listerdale, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

Listerdale lies under 3 miles from the M18; there, take the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Listerdale makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Sheffield — so tell us about how far it went.

## Listerdale: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Alban's CofE (Aided) Primary School, close to St Albans Church Hall or on your own drive.

What fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the replies decide the work and quote.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the quote over the phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it counts more.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

After that we start the engine and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
