# Little Herberts: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle is in Little Herberts.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

No single fluid but two: that is what many newer diesels near Little Herberts and Ryeworth run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station visit, week in, week out.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Little Herberts?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Maple Drive, or heading home in the car park at The Merryfellow.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

East End or the heart of Little Herberts: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Sandy Lane or a forecourt around Little Herberts, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Cheltenham Spa? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Gloucestershire, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Cherry Avenue.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Shut the cap, then check again — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. Only then, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Little Herberts: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or anywhere else.

## Our arrival in Little Herberts, and what happens next

Anywhere the car has stopped, be it by Charlton Kings Junior School, near 125 (Cheltenham) Squadron or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Next our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
