# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Little Moor: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the car sits around Little Moor, is usually all it takes when found before your engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many newer diesels driven around Little Moor and Foggbrook carry a second liquid as well.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There is a filler on every tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Little Moor: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Banks Lane, or outside The Emigration on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it happens in Offerton or the middle of Little Moor, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Stockport Great Moor or a forecourt around Little Moor.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark which belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Stockport? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Greater Manchester that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush by Marsland Terrace at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through its own spout.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Little Moor?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Shell, Esso or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away when you ask.

On your own drive in Little Moor? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M60 — under 3 miles out of Little Moor — at the first junction.

A short hop across Little Moor is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Little Moor: what takes place when our engineers get there

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside Banks Lane Junior School, near Stockport Lads Club or at home, our van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers settle the work and our quote.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Once your filter is flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then your vehicle gets tested.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Greater Manchester, Little Moor included

Little Moor is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Heaviley and Mile End among them, across the SK postcode area.

Quote a postcode beginning SK1 4, and the van arrives quickest.

Shifting your car isn't needed.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near St Alban, a lay-by on the way to St. Thomas' Recreation Ground, a driveway.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Woodbank Community Centre? Close to a border? Checking beats guessing, so phone.

## Little Moor drivers: the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Greater Manchester, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
