# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Little Parndon: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits around Little Parndon, is normally what it takes when found before the motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Little Parndon and Netteswell carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, week in, week out.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Little Parndon: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Hamstel Road before work, or in the car park at The William Aylmer on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in The High or the middle of Little Parndon, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Little Parndon or a driveway over in Netteswell Cross. A few seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- On many motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark which belongs in which inlet right there.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Harlow Town's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever it is around Essex — a routine to use.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Fourth Avenue.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Little Parndon: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Sainsbury's or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Little Parndon is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M11 — under 3 miles out of Little Parndon — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Little Parndon is smaller work than a run of under 25 miles to Chelmsford, so say.

## Little Parndon: what happens when our technicians arrive

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Pemberley Academy, near Shenzhou or at home, our van travels to it.

Both the work and our quote depend on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so our technicians ask.

That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and the system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

After that we fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
