# Little Venice: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Little Venice, finding it before the engine turns usually means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of modern diesels around Westbourne Green, like those in Little Venice, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Little Venice

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Harrow Road before work, or in the car park at Prince of Wales heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes seconds, be it out in Paddington or right in the centre of Little Venice.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Maida Vale or a forecourt around Little Venice.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside London Paddington, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Greater London, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine off, and not rushed by Westway on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- The two behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Little Venice: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of that: the engine remains off.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Little Venice.

Already run? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M1, under 5 miles from Little Venice.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Westminster, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Little Venice.

## Little Venice: what occurs when our technicians arrive

By St Saviour's CofE Primary School, near Two men facing each other or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

The replies decide this work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting W2 6.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Rembrandt Gardens, a side street near Sheldon Square: our technicians drain it where it is.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Alan Turing Memorial, ring and ask instead of assuming.
