# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Littleton Common: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Keep the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the car sits around Littleton Common, is normally what it takes if caught before your motor runs.

Reading in advance? Then what follows explains why it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of current diesels seen around Littleton Common and Felthamhill carry a second fluid too.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

There is a filler on each tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Littleton Common

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Bridge Gardens, or on the way home in the car park at The Harrow.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Littleton Common or out in Ashford Common.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Sunbury Common or a forecourt around Littleton Common.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Upper Halliford? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in Surrey the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Littleton Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Step five stays out.

## Littleton Common: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

If you are on your own drive around Littleton Common, leave it where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M3, under a mile from Littleton Common.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Littleton Common is a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Westminster — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Littleton Common, what takes place?

By Meadhurst Primary School, close to Charlton Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those answers settle the work and the quote.

No one heads out before you've had our price by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your car.

Before we go, our engineers start the engine and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
