# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Littlewood? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep the ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Littlewood, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Littlewood

Do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting WS6 7, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition the car.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Littlewood Lane.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Littlewood forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

At home, your car stays exactly where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its supply from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Cheslyn Hay last night and never switched on stays the simple one, provided no one turns your key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Littlewood with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only in your tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Sainsbury's, and this issue is thinned fuel.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in that tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Great Wyrley or the middle of Littlewood.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has come to rest around Staffordshire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Littlewood: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it is not the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and pours it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill is rushed outside Glenthorne Community Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Littlewood Road.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside Hawkins Sports & Social Club, and someone using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere around Staffordshire, Littlewood included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Littlewood?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Great Wyrley high School Playing Fields or halfway across Littlewood.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M6 Toll, under a mile from Littlewood, by the next junction and park safely, not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Littlewood to the car park by Hawkins Sports & Social Club Sporting Grounds is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the engine has run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is caught soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Littlewood?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Littlewood: a side street near St Marks Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those decide the work.

Then that tank is drained where the vehicle stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, provided the engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Lastly, the system is primed with new diesel.

Whether it's a parking space at Landywood or a driveway in Littlewood, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Littlewood lies approximately 7 miles from Wolverhampton and 114 miles northwest of London, within the West Midlands region. ## AdBlue drains across Littlewood and Staffordshire

Churchbridge, Bridgtown and Leacroft are among the places near Littlewood that the same teams reach, together with much of Staffordshire beyond, throughout the WS postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No towing is needed. In Littlewood, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your car is drained where it stands, be it on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## Littlewood: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the jobs differ, a flat figure would not be honest.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind TK Maxx.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Littlewood begins with three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether the engine ran.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Beside the vehicle in Littlewood, still?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if the engine ran are everything our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Staffordshire, Littlewood included.
