# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Llanrumney

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits in Llanrumney.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Llanrumney and Llanedeyrn carry another liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Llanrumney: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Glastonbury Terrace before work, or in the car park at Llanrumney Hall on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a new motor.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Llanrumney or out in Rumney.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Llanedeyrn Village or a forecourt in Llanrumney, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Heath High Level.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across Cardiff, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ridgeway Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Llanrumney already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Texaco, Morrisons or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away when asked.

If you're on your own drive in Llanrumney, leave it where it is.

Already run? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

Leave the A48(M) — under 3 miles out of Llanrumney — at the next junction.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Llanrumney is a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Cardiff — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when our technicians get there around Llanrumney

Outside the local primary school, near Eastern Leisure Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The replies decide the work and our quote, so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

No one sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears away on its own, however long it is left.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

Before we leave, we start the engine and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

The car doesn't need to move.

Draining happens right there, whether a driveway, a road near Rumney R.F.C., or a lay-by on the way to Parc Coed y Cwar.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Llanrumney Hub, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## Llanrumney motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Cardiff.
