# Llantarnam: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Llantarnam, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Llantarnam

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Quote a NP44 3 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the motor remains off.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets the pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Llantarnam Park Way.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it yourself.

The staff working at any Llantarnam filling station — the BP among them — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the pickup draws from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits underneath the diesel, which is why a car filled in Llanfrechfa last night and not switched on stays the simple case, provided nobody touches the key.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Overnight, a car parked in Llantarnam with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell.

No damage is done while it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether your vehicle is in Two Locks or the centre of Llantarnam, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Anywhere across Torfaen the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Llantarnam?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — can appear the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

A driver tips the bottle in at home, just off William Brown Close, as the day ends.

One more pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Greenhouse, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the other car in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people use the least.

An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you are around Llantarnam or the remainder of Torfaen.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Llantarnam, and the engine started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may appear, perhaps part way across Llantarnam or coming back from Crow Valley Central Recreation Grounds.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M4, under 3 miles from Llantarnam, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Hopping across Llantarnam to the car park by Church of Saint Michael and All Angels is one matter; heading towards Newport, under 5 miles away, is something else, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Spotted soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## Llantarnam: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Llantarnam: a side street close to Great Western Railway bridge limit, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What got in, roughly the quantity, plus if the motor has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the job.

Then the tank is emptied where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians turn up, provided the motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with new diesel comes last.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, by Cwmbran or on a drive around Llantarnam.

It's tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers leave.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## About Llantarnam

Llantarnam is a suburban area in Torfaen, situated on the banks of the River Usk at an elevation of around 40 metres. Llantarnam lies close to the city of Newport, with which it forms a continuous urban area. Llantarnam is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and its proximity to nearby places such as Croes-y-mwyalch and Oakfield.

## Llantarnam and Torfaen: AdBlue drains across the area

Croes-y-mwyalch, Oakfield and Ty Coch are among the towns around Llantarnam that the same teams serve, along with much of Torfaen beyond, throughout the NP postcode area.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're by a border, or somewhere awkward to explain.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — we drain it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Llantarnam, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Llantarnam?

Every job differs, and so no fixed quote is honest.

Three things move the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind John Williams Fielding VC.

That's why every call from Llantarnam starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

When they are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## In Llantarnam and still alongside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that is the best move there is.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Llantarnam or anywhere within Torfaen.
