# Llwydcoed: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine sucks it through.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully rinsed where the vehicle sits in Llwydcoed.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Llwydcoed: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting CF44 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition your car.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Maes yr Helyg.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The attendants working at any Llwydcoed filling station — the Tesco included — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the very spot the intake draws from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Trecynon last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it is cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny channels.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning in Llwydcoed leaves things worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Mixed into the diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; running your engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, and so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Robertstown or the heart of Llwydcoed alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Rhondda Cynon Taf the vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Llwydcoed: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

Someone tips the bottle in at home, right off Kingsbury Court, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at Corner House, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, brand-new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most.

Wherever you're in Llwydcoed or the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Llwydcoed, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It's been pulled through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, perhaps part way across Llwydcoed or returning from Llwydcoed Memorial Park.

No starting it again to test: stop once it is safe, then turn it off.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M4, under 15 miles from Llwydcoed, at the first junction and park safely, not driving on.

Hopping across Llwydcoed to the car park by Saint James' Church is one thing; driving for Cardiff, under 25 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up.

If it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

## Llwydcoed: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that's a road near Llwyncoed Community Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Llwydcoed, and the van comes to it.

Three answers decide the work, so first we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is drained, on the spot.

A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't clear out by itself.

Testing the car follows last, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The final step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Aberdare or a drive around Llwydcoed, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

No moving is needed. In Llwydcoed, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Llwydcoed: the cost of fixing it

Not one single figure could be fair, since each job is different.

Three things change the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind St Fagan's Church.

For that reason, every enquiry from Llwydcoed opens with the same trio — which fluid was put in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote.

Once those are known, a range turns into a single firm figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Llwydcoed: still alongside the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Llwydcoed or anywhere in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
