# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lochardil

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Lochardil, catching it before the motor runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Lochardil and Ness-side carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lochardil: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Morven Road before work, or in the car park at The Three Witches on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

Whether it takes place in Upper Drummond or the middle of Lochardil, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Ballifeary or a forecourt around Lochardil.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Inverness.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Highland, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Balnakyle Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Lochardil: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Asda, Tesco or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away if asked.

Your own driveway around Lochardil is where it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M90 — over 50 miles out of Lochardil — at the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Inverness, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Lochardil.

## Our arrival around Lochardil, and what occurs next

By the local primary school, close to Culduthel Christian Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the replies set the work and price.

No one heads out until you've heard our price by phone.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
