# Lochee: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle is in Lochee.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Lochee and Ninewells carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Lochee?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Heron's Lane, perhaps outside The Albert Bar on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a strange motor.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Menzieshill or bang in the centre of Lochee.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt around Lochee or a driveway out in St Marys. A few seconds, that's all.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Dundee? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Dundee City that is.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of South Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lochee?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at BP, Tesco or another forecourt will normally help to push the car clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Lochee.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Leave the M90 — under 25 miles out of Lochee — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Lochee is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Dundee, so tell us.

## Our arrival around Lochee, and what happens next

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, near Frame or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

The replies decide this work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## For Lochee people, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Dundee City.
