# Lockerbie: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Lockerbie.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — but many modern diesels driven round Lockerbie and Applegarthtown hold a second liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Lockerbie: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Goods Station Road before work, or in the car park outside The Black Bull on the way home.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, whether out in Greenhill or right in the heart of Lockerbie.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in South Corrielaw or a forecourt in Lockerbie.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are in Dumfries and Galloway — a routine to follow.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Arthur's Place at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — making sure your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lockerbie already?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive in Lockerbie, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

Leave the A74(M) — under a mile out of Lockerbie — at the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Carlisle, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Lockerbie.

## Our arrival in Lockerbie, and what takes place next

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside the local primary school, near Lockerbie Town Hall or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Those answers determine this work and the quote, so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Before leaving, our engineers start the engine and confirm that it is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to check yours.
