# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Locking Castle: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Locking Castle, finding it before the motor turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Here before the event? Then the rest explains why it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many modern diesels driven about Locking Castle and Weston Village carry a second liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Locking Castle: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Diamond Batch before work, or in the car park outside The Bucket & Spade on the way home.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the tip begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Locking Castle or out in West Wick.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Locking Castle forecourt or a drive out in Way Wick, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Worle? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Somerset that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Elmham Way.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## Locking Castle: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Sainsbury's or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Locking Castle, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M5, under a mile from Locking Castle, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Locking Castle is a smaller job than a run towards Cardiff, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Locking Castle: what occurs when our engineers get there

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Herons' Moor Academy, close to Living Sculpture or on your own driveway.

Which liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies decide both work and quote.

No one heads out before you have heard our quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
