# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lode: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits around Lode, is normally all it needs if caught before the motor runs.

Here before the event? In that case what follows explains why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Lode and Commercial End carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Lode?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off High Street, or outside the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Lode or out in Long Meadow.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Stow cum Quy or a forecourt around Lode.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Waterbeach.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever in Cambridgeshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Lode Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lode?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Teversham Motors or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Lode, leave the car where it is.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M11, under 10 miles from Lode, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Cambridge, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Lode.

## Our arrival around Lode, and what happens next

Outside Swaffham Bulbeck Church of England Primary School, near War Memorial or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

The answers settle the work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it is left.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians leave.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Quickest of all: quote a CB25 9 postcode to the van.

Your car remains where it is.

The drain takes place right there, be it a driveway, a road by St James', or a layby towards The Winter Garden.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Lode Chapel? By a border? Asking beats guessing, so phone.
