# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lodge Moor: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Lodge Moor, finding it before your motor turns usually leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Lodge Moor and Hallam Head carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap it needs.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Lodge Moor

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Blackbrook Avenue, or on the way home in the car park at The Shiny Sheff.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Lodge Moor or out in Fulwood.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Lodge Moor forecourt or a drive over in Carsick Hill, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Dore & Totley.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever around South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Blackbrook Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Lodge Moor?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the JET or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Lodge Moor.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Lodge Moor, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Lodge Moor is smaller a job than a trip of under 5 miles towards Sheffield, and so tell us.

## Our arrival around Lodge Moor, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Hallam Nursery & Primary School, close to St Luke's Church or on your own drive.

Those replies determine the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

On the call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
