# Longbenton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not turned, it's emptied and fully purged where the car sits in Longbenton.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many current diesels on the roads about Longbenton and Killingworth Village carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Longbenton?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Station Road North, perhaps at Flying Scotsman on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Longbenton or out in Forest Hall.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Palmersville or a forecourt in Longbenton.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Manors's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Station Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Longbenton?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Asda, the Esso or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Longbenton is the place it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means the place to leave if you're on the Clayton Road, under 5 miles from Longbenton.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Longbenton.

## Our arrival in Longbenton, and what takes place next

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Springfield Community Centre, or by Forest Hall Primary School.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

The quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and your system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## Longbenton and Tyne and Wear: AdBlue drains across the area

Longbenton is a riverside town, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Benton and Killingworth Moor among them, across the NE postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts NE12 9, and the van gets there fastest.

Shifting your car is not needed.

Anywhere it sits — beside Forest Hall Library, in a layby heading to Springfield Park, at home — that's where it is drained.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Bethesda Gospel Hall.
