# Longbridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once the pump begins drawing it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully purged where your car sits in Longbridge.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Longbridge, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- Remove your keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Put your hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting PL6 8, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so keep it off.

- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Even a short distance up St Modwen Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Longbridge filling station — the Sainsbury's included — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very place the intake draws from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Efford overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches till it's removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked in Longbridge. Just inside your tank, it stays the same.

The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole problem.

Damage just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the following tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Longbridge or out in Eggbuckland, costs more than almost any other slip.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Devon your car is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Longbridge: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; many designs invite it.

Usually it's not the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Woodford Primary School the top-up is hurried.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Marsh Mills Park.

Else, in dim light outside Windmill Inn, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor of a family with one of each fuels.

Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever in Longbridge or the rest of Devon you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Longbridge?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been sucked through the filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Efford Marsh Nature Reserve or halfway across Longbridge.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Longbridge sits under 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Longbridge to park beside Plymouth Snowsports Centre and a drive of under 3 miles for Plymouth are such distinct jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Spotted soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Longbridge

A road beside Efford Fort, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has come to rest around Longbridge, we come to it.

The work depends on three answers, and our technicians get before all else — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

Then your tank is drained where the car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

A test of the vehicle comes last, after clean diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if needed, swapped.

Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Plymouth or on a drive around Longbridge.

The test before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## About Longbridge itself

Longbridge is a small suburban area in Devon, situated near the coast and close to the city of Plymouth. Longbridge has a low elevation of around 2 metres, indicating its proximity to the sea. Longbridge is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near other suburban areas such as Marsh Mills and Leigham.

## Longbridge and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Longbridge are passed to vans that serve the towns around it — Marsh Mills, Crabtree plus Leigham — and much of Devon further out, across PL postcodes.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're by a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere the car stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — we empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Longbridge, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Longbridge?

There is no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

What changes the price is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Plym Valley Railway.

Before a quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from Longbridge opens with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran.

With those replies, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still beside the car in Longbridge?

Then, the best thing to do with your car is to leave it.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether it ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Devon, Longbridge included.
