# Longbridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your motor off and leave your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just comes once your pump starts drawing it.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car stands in Longbridge.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Longbridge, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, so don't throw it out.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting CV34 6, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the car.

Never do these:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is wasted.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Stratford Road.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

At a forecourt around Longbridge, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor emits.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Bridge End last night and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out.

A motor left sitting in Longbridge with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in the tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Hampton Magna or the middle of Longbridge.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere in Warwickshire the vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Longbridge: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Newburgh Primary School.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near The Peacocks.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, stopped in the car park by The Unicorn.

The least known vehicles see it most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels.

Wherever you're in Longbridge or the remainder of Warwickshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Longbridge, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It has been pulled through your filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Ashbeds Wood, say, or midway across Longbridge.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M40, under a mile from Longbridge, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Longbridge to the car park by Warwick University Boat Club is one thing; heading for Coventry, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Longbridge?

Anywhere it has come to rest in Longbridge — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Playbox Theatre — the van comes to your vehicle.

Three answers decide the work, so first we ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after the tank is emptied, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided the motor has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside Warwick Parkway or on a driveway around Longbridge.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Longbridge

Not one single price would be fair, because each job is different.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind All Saints.

That's why every call from Longbridge starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

With them, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
