# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Longford: How It Happens and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Longford.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels in Aldermans Green, as well as Longford, run on two liquids; your motor takes only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Longford: how it takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Longford Road, perhaps outside Coach & Horses on the way home that evening.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

It's seconds, be it out in Woodshires Green or bang in the heart of Longford.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Rowleys Green or a forecourt in Longford.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors mark which belongs in each filler right there.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Coventry Arena.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is in West Midlands — a simple routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Longford Square.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Longford already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Tesco, Texaco or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle away when asked.

Your own driveway around Longford is the place it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M6, under a mile from Longford, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Longford is a smaller job than a run towards Coventry, under 5 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up in Longford

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside St. Thomas, or by Grangehurst Primary School.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
