# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Longshoot: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Longshoot, catching it before the motor runs usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels around Longshoot and Height End run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Longshoot: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Rifle Street, or on the way home in the car park outside The Green Squirrel.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Whether it occurs in Lane Side or the middle of Longshoot, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Longshoot forecourt or a driveway over in Waterfoot, spend a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or company car — from Accrington's car park, say — rather than when the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever in Lancashire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Hillside Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Longshoot?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Longshoot, leave the vehicle where it stands.

When the engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off.

Longshoot lies under 3 miles from the M66; on it, use the first junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Longshoot makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Salford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Longshoot: what takes place when we turn up

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by Haslingden Primary School, beside Greenfield Gardens War Memorial or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because those replies determine the work and our price.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

Before we go, we fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Give a postcode beginning BB4 6, and our van gets there fastest.

There's no need to move the car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to St Peter, a lay-by on the way to Greenfield Memorial Gardens, a driveway.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Haslingden Library? By a county line? Asking beats assuming, so phone.
