# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Loughmacrory

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Loughmacrory, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Loughmacrory: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting BT79 9, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Do not:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on many diesels. Skip it.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way up B842.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

The staff working at any Loughmacrory forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, which is why a car filled in Edenderry yesterday and never switched on stays the simple one, provided no one turns your key.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it reaches till it is cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Loughmacrory makes it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be watered down, because it splits back out — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Loughmacrory or out in Greencastle, costs more than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around County Tyrone the vehicle is sitting.

## Loughmacrory: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried.

Close to Dunaverty Court, someone tips a container in on the drive in the evening.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by the pub in the village.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the other motor of a family with one of each fuels — the cars drivers know least.

An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Loughmacrory or the rest of County Tyrone.

## Loughmacrory: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, maybe part way across Loughmacrory or returning from the green space at the edge of the village.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M77, over 50 miles from Loughmacrory, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Loughmacrory to the car park by the centre is a very different job from a run towards Armagh, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the cleaning where the car has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

When it's noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Loughmacrory?

A road by a street just off the centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Loughmacrory, our technicians come to it.

Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the job.

Then the tank is emptied where your car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the system on clean diesel.

You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Loughmacrory or in a bay by the nearest station.

It's tested on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers leave.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Loughmacrory: the cost of fixing it

No flat figure would be honest, since every job differs.

What changes the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind the far end of the built-up part.

Ahead of any figure, not afterwards, every call from Loughmacrory begins with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether it ran.

With those replies, a range shrinks to one firm number.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
