# Lowdham: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is in Lowdham.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains why it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — but many current diesels seen round Lowdham and Epperstone hold a second fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Lowdham

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Main Street before work, or in the car park outside The Old Ship on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it happens in Gonalston or the middle of Lowdham, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Lowdham or a driveway out in Caythorpe. A few seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Nottinghamshire, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Ton Lane East.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lowdham?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, Gulf or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle away if asked.

If you're on your own drive in Lowdham, leave it where it stands.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Lowdham lies under 10 miles from the M1; on it, use the first exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Lowdham makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Nottingham — so say about how far it went.

## Lowdham: what takes place when our technicians get there

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Lowdham CofE Primary School, close to Lowdham Library or on your own driveway.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide both work and price.

No one sets off before you've heard our quote by phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

The motor is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before we head off.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Lowdham is a village, and our teams that cover it also work the places near it, Bulcote and Gunthorpe among them, across the NG postcode area.

A postcode starting NG14 7 gets the van to you fastest.

Moving the car isn't necessary.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Garden of Rememberance, a side street close to Lowdham Village Hall: our engineers drain the car where it is.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Lowdham Independent Primitive Methodist Chapel? Close to a border? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Lowdham drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.
