# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Gornal: Why It Occurs

Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is in Lower Gornal.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Lower Gornal and Gornalwood carry, with diesel for the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## Lower Gornal: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Ruiton Street before work, or in the car park at Fountain heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Ruiton or the heart of Lower Gornal: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Lower Gornal or a drive out in The Straits. A few seconds, that's all.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Coseley? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is in West Midlands — a simple routine to follow.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside Holloway Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Lower Gornal: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Lower Gornal? Then your car stays put.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off.

Come off the M5 — under 5 miles out of Lower Gornal — at the first exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Lower Gornal makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Wolverhampton — so say about how far it went.

## Lower Gornal: what happens when our engineers arrive

By Roberts Primary School, close to St James the Great or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine this work and the quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

After that we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
