# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Green

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it's sucked through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands around Lower Green.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Lower Green, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Take your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and about what quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting TN2 4, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Do not:

- Moving your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Maidstone Road.

- By the road, do not try draining it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Lower Green forecourt — the Esso among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

No part in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

It does not combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake draws from.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Kippings Cross yesterday and never started stays the simple case, provided nobody turns the key.

After it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Lower Green leaves things worse. In your tank alone, time does nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a separate kind of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a problem of thin fuel.

No harm comes as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Capel or the middle of Lower Green.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside that tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Kent.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lower Green: how it ends up there

It's not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

A container picked up while driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them.

The top-up is rushed outside Pembury School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in.

Near Stone Court Lane, someone tips a bottle in at home after work.

Else, after dark outside Black Horse, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use least.

An identical mistake, same first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Lower Green or the rest of Kent.

## Lower Green: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might appear, perhaps midway across Lower Green or coming back from Pembury Recreation Ground.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M26, under 15 miles from Lower Green, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so heading towards Brighton and Hove, under 50 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Lower Green to the car park by Pembury Library.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Lower Green

A road by Pembury Baptist Church, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Lower Green, our engineers travel to it.

The work depends on three replies, and our technicians ask for first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Lastly, the system is bled with new diesel.

You drive off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Lower Green or in a bay outside High Brooms.

Before we leave, our technicians confirm it is running correctly with clean diesel in.

We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are close to a county line, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

A mobile service suits Lower Green, a residential suburb: you have no need to take your car to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Lower Green?

Since the jobs differ, a flat figure wouldn't be honest.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind St Peter's Old Church.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: every Lower Green enquiry opens by asking exactly that, before a figure, never after.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Still beside the vehicle in Lower Green?
