# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Green? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts when the pump starts pulling it.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Lower Green.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Lower Green, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.

- Call right where you are. Say a TN4 8 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not:

- Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it is wasted.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along Lower Green Road.

- Emptying that tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

On a forecourt around Lower Green, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car away from the petrol pump.

On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Nothing in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to go that way.

It does not combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Bullingstone last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it's drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it's removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages.

A car left standing around Lower Green with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in the tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Nevill Park or the middle of Lower Green.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Kent the car is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Lower Green

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

A bottle picked up when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Rusthall St Paul's CofE Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Ashley Gardens.

Otherwise, after dark by Red Lion, your car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a new motor, a company motor, or the spare vehicle of a family with both fuels — the cars drivers use the least.

An identical mistake, same first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be around Lower Green or the remainder of Kent.

## Lower Green: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, maybe midway across Lower Green or coming back from Hurst Wood.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M25, under 15 miles from Lower Green, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Lower Green to the car park by Rusthall URC Church is one thing; heading for Brighton and Hove, under 50 miles away, is something else, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

If it's caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Lower Green: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped in Lower Green — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside St Paul's Church Centre — the van travels to your vehicle.

Which fluid went in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run: our technicians ask first, because those decide the work.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, provided your motor hasn't run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Whether it's a parking space at Tunbridge Wells or a driveway around Lower Green, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs properly on clean diesel.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Kent, Lower Green included

Broomhill Bank, Rusthall and Denny Bottom are among the places near Lower Green that the same vans reach, along with much of Kent beyond, over the TN postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help by a border or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

Lower Green is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Lower Green: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each jobs differ, a single price would not be fair.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Rusthall Library.

With that in mind, every call from Lower Green begins with the same trio — what got in, how much, whether it ran — ahead of a quote.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.

## Lower Green: still beside your car?

Not touching your car is, then, the best thing you can do.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, across Lower Green or anywhere within Kent, after you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether it ran.
