# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Knowle: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Lower Knowle, catching it before your motor turns usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many current diesels seen round Lower Knowle and Windmill Hill carry another fluid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## Lower Knowle: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Galway Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Brunel.

Unfamiliar motors come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Filwood Park or the middle of Lower Knowle, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Inns Court or a forecourt around Lower Knowle.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which goes in which filler right there.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bedminster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are in Bristol — a routine to use.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Leinster Avenue on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lower Knowle already?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Texaco or another forecourt will normally help to push the car clear if you ask.

At home in Lower Knowle? So your car remains put.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off.

Lower Knowle lies under 3 miles from the M32; on it, take the first exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Lower Knowle makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles to Bristol — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Lower Knowle: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Outside Oasis Academy Connaught, near Knowle West or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide the work and our quote.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
