# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lower Place

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle stands in Lower Place.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Lower Place: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting OL11 1, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Well I' Th' Lane.

- By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Lower Place forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

On the drive, your car remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite different from fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Balderstone last night and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A vehicle left sitting in Lower Place with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a separate form of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Morrisons, and the issue is thinned fuel.

Mixed into the diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless for now; running your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Whether your car sits in Kirkholt or the centre of Lower Place, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester your car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Lower Place: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Lowerplace Primary School the top-up is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Queensway.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Hornet, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company motor, or the other motor in a family with both fuel types — the cars people know least.

An identical slip, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you are around Lower Place or the remainder of Greater Manchester.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lower Place?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Through the filter, through the lines, and — given any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may show up, perhaps midway across Lower Place or returning from Balderstone Park.

When you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the A627(M), under a mile from Lower Place, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Lower Place to park near St. Mary's and a drive of under 10 miles for Manchester are very distinct jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Lasting damage is very unusual if it is spotted quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Lower Place: what it takes

The car stays put, whether that's a street near Balderstone Library, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Lower Place, and the van comes to it.

Three answers shape the job, so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then your tank is emptied where your car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Last, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay by Rochdale or a drive in Lower Place, that is where our technicians start the car and you head off.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before we head off.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

Guessing doesn't help by a border or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and ask.

Lower Place is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Lower Place

Each job is different, and so not one single price would be fair.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind St Luke.

Before any quote, never afterwards, every enquiry from Lower Place opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus whether it ran.

Those answers shrink the range right down to one figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
