# Lower Walton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Lower Walton.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers how it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your engine — but many newer diesels driven about Lower Walton and Higher Walton carry a second liquid too.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Lower Walton

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Hill Cliffe Road, perhaps outside The Stag at Walton on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Stockton Heath or the middle of Lower Walton: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Lower Walton or a drive out in Cobbs. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Warrington Bank Quay.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever it is in Cheshire — a routine to use.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Carlingford Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Lower Walton?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the Morrisons or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Lower Walton.

Where your engine has run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

Come off the M56 — under 3 miles out of Lower Walton — at the first exit.

A short hop across Lower Walton is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when we get there around Lower Walton

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Hill Cliffe Baptist Church, or by Stockton Heath Primary School.

Which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set the work and price.

The quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
